Introduction - About us

Situated on the foreshore of the Swan River at Nedlands, with our wide grassy lawns, sandy tornado_club_infobeaches, and overlooking the broad expanse of Melville Water, we have an ideal location for sailing.

Nedlands Yacht Club has grown from a small club sailing VJs in 1953 to a club that supports many different classes of boats, from small monohull dinghies to medium monohull dinghies, fast catamarans including Nacras, Tornados and Hobies,  and cruisers which include family cruisers as well as fast sports boats. We concentrate on sailing boats and the only power boats at the club belong to the club as support boats.

The Club has always been a family oriented, vibrant and friendly club. Some families are the fourth generation to be members at the club. We are a self help club, able to minimize costs using resources given voluntarily by club members. New members are always welcome and will find many members eager to share their knowledge and help.

Safety_boatOur aim is to foster interest in all aspects of sailing, offering YAWA accredited courses for learning to sail for both pleasure and competition. Our sailors range from beginners to world title holders. Courses are available for learning to sail for all ages, improving your sailing, first aid, and the Recreational Skippers Ticket.

Training is conducted on Sunday mornings with the chance to sail in the afternoon races. Training for juniors is also conducted during school holidays.

healthyclublogo-xsmSafety is of prime importance and all sailing is governed with strict safety requirements. Through a Healthy Club grant from Healthway and Sports Medicine Western Australia we have expanded our health and safety outreach. Our club organises and subsidises First Aid and CPR training for our members and we provide the National Power Boat Handling Certificate training to our volunteers. We provide appropriate and comfortable PFDs and it is our policy that students, volunteers and members use safety equipment at our club.

We sail on Sundays from October to April excluding long weekends then once a month for the winter frostbite series. A Cat Classic starts the season in late September. If you don’t want to sail but enjoy being on the water then come down. You may be able to help on our Support boats.

Our large, air-conditioned Club House has unrestricted river views and is a great place to hold functions.

As part of a community partnership with Act, Belong, Commit, we have a variety of activities for all age groups from great grandchildren to great grandparents. Sail together on the same boat or sail on different boats on the same day. Or bring friends and family to enjoy the veranda and nearby playground while you sail. We host a variety of public events, such as sailing classes and Try Sailing 3 Times for Free. We invite new members. Become part of our community!
