Nedlands Yacht Club offers a variety of training opportunities throughout the season from September to April each year.
Junior Learn to Sail / Yachting Australia "Get Into Small Boat Sailing" 8 years old and up on a Pacer (2-3 students per boat). Typically Level 1 or Level 1 & 2 morning classes are held over consecutive days over the school holidays. Class includes a free junior membership for the season. Junior Transition to Racing A follow on for 8 year olds on up, teaches racing skills on a variety of boats (Pacer, Manly Jr, Flying 11) based on skill / size / age. Workshops are held as-needed throughout the season on Saturday or Sunday mornings. Instructors and families work together on dates and number of sessions. Adult Learn to Sail / Yachting Australia "Get Into Small Boat Sailing" 14 years old and adults or families - combining parents with 12 year olds and up on a Pacer (2 students per boat). This class is typically held over 8 Saturday or 8 Sunday mornings twice a year. Dates are announced at the beginning and middle of the season. Contact NYC to be added to the waiting list. Family Social Sail - Casual Coaching and Practice Adults or Juniors who are actively taking the Learn to Sail class OR who have finished the Learn to Sail class are welcome to get extra practice with a coach. Only the helmsman needs to have taken or be taking the class. The crew can be 1-2 family members who'd like to enjoy sailing. The sessions are held 2 Sunday mornings every month during the September to April season. Additionally, students can use this workshop to make up missed classes. Participants do not need to be members. Life jackets, coach and 12 ft / 3.6 m training sailboats are provided by NYC. Cost is $20 per person, minimum 2 people per boat and maximum 3 people per boat. WA Recreational Skippers Ticket or National Power Boat Handling Safety Certificate For 16 year olds and adults that are handling powered boats and required for regatta safety boat skippers. Classes are taught over multiple evenings with practical on-the-water test on a weekend following class. NYC members can get free or subsidized tuition. WA Recreational Skipper's Ticket (RST) is the minimum legal requirement for operating any motor vessel rated at 6 hp or more. Dates are usually announced at the beginning or early sailing season.
First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Surf Life Saving Western Australia is invited to NYC at the beginning of each season to teach this water safety oriented First Aid class. The class is open to the public and usually held over 2 Saturdays. NYC members and sailing instrutors can get free or subsized tuition. Dates are usually announced early sailing season.
