Adults and Teens Racing Skills Workshop
Being run for the first time, this workshop aims to provide a transition for those who have completed a GISBS in the Puffin Pacers and are interested in getting into sailing racing but do not yet feel comfortable walking into the heat of battle on a Cruiser, 125 or Hobie on a Sunday afternoon. This transitioning workshop aims to cement the skills taught in Basic Skills 1 & 2 while extending their application to a range of wind conditions and in the context of a sailing race.
Who will be teaching? Graham Sharpe. Instructor extraordinaire, Graham is a high level sailing coach who regularly teaches GISBS courses and has taught NYC's Junior Section's Transition to Racing course in 2010. For those who haven't met him, Graham has the ultimate 'just do it' attitude to sports including sailing. All of us who work with him find this attitude totally infectious and you can trust Graham to teach you tons while you have fun and sail fast!
What will we do? The workshop will draw upon the knowledge gained in the GISBS course, but will also extend sailing skills and will encompass the 'tweaking' of sails under different conditions (down haul, out haul, boom vang, main sheet, jib sheets), down wind sailing (raising of the centerboard board half way on runs), start line procedures, racing rules etc. All of these skills will be taught in a racing context, with all students participating in a race each week. The racing course that will be used for the workshop will encompass the normal club start line but will deviate from all other races being sailed on the day.
Participation in this workshop is currently restricted to those who have completed a GISBS course at NYC within the last year. If this excludes you but you are interested in undertaking a similar course be sure to email Andre and we will try and accommodate.
