Try Sailing at NYC

Never sailed before but keen to give it a go?
Then Nedlands Yacht Club is the place for you!

If you’re a first-time sailor and don’t want to commit to a series of formal classes just yet, you are welcome to join us on Sunday afternoons from October to April for the club racing season.  We welcome you to have a go on any boat at the club for a total of three races for free.  If after three weeks you’re eager to keep sailing, our members can help you find an affordable membership that suits your sailing interests.  Read on to find out more about the different types of boat raced at NYC.

Looking for a friendly team environment where you can learn from lots of people at your own pace? Our experienced cruiser skippers will happily welcome you on board their boats and show you the ropes.  Cruisers are larger boats typically sailed by teams of 3-6 people.  The cruiser fleet at NYC is a varied group, ranging from slower boats designed with leisure sailing in mind to fast sports boats designed for speed and competition.  The cruiser fleet races nearly every Sunday afternoon from October to April, and there is always space available for a few extra crew members.  New sailors are invited to join the pre-race meeting under the tree (see map below - tree is in yellow) at 12.15 to introduce themselves to skippers and find a place on a boat.

If you’re looking for more of a challenge, NYC has fleets of monohull National 125s and catamarans (mostly Hobie 16s) racing nearly every Sunday afternoon from October to April.  These boats are sailed by two people and require a keen attitude, moderate level of physical fitness, and a willingness to come up close and personal with the Swan River. Contact fleet captains through emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
